so, about the chiss laying eggs thing, how does it work? how does thrawn lay eggs, with him being male and all? also, how does incubation work? like does one parent just lay with the egg all day to keep it warm? i know the chiss probably have electronic incubators, but what about before that? sorry if these questions are annoying, i just want to know how you think it works! i really love the chiss lay eggs theory.

alright ive been waiting for the right time to sit down and write this out because it turns out i have accumulated more (serious) chiss egg headcanons than i initially expected to lol

(also THANK YOU for asking me about chiss eggs it’s my favorite thing to talk about)

disclaimer: i haven’t established all of this fully so any cool additions are welcome. plus a lot of this wasn’t just my ideas. much of this was made up by me and @mistressminako (and some other friends) over on twitter. and yes this is not a shitpost i actually unironically love the idea of chiss laying eggs :3

firstly, i headcanon that all chiss can lay eggs, whether they have male or female genitalia. depending on what you imagine chiss genitalia to be, they can lay the eggs through their butt or have an entirely separate pathway of their reproductive system just for egg laying (i suck at terminology in this part, my apologies)

chiss lay eggs similarly to how a bird would lay an egg. if you want the egg to produce a baby you need to fertilize it a.k.a have sex. chiss lay one egg per year. (the length of the cycle varies from person to person, just like human periods) and once the egg is laid, it takes another 6-ish months for the babies to hatch

if an egg is unfertilized, it can be discarded, or the contents of the egg drained and the shell used for decoration/jewellery.

the eggs are relatively large, about a forearm’s length, though laying the egg is much easier than giving birth for humans. the egg is soft/jelly-like as it comes out; the shell only hardens after a few minutes of contact with oxygen. the color/texture of the egg varies from chiss to chiss, but they all have an iridescent sheen to it. laying the egg is also physically pleasurable to the chiss, rather than causing discomfort. it takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to lay one egg.

the chiss can choose to incubate their eggs in specially designed incubators, or incubate them themselves (aka just laying with the egg in a nest of blankets), though many probably choose a combination of the two. it’s believed that the more time you spend with the egg, the healthier and happier the child will be. chiss often purr to their eggs too, as the vibrations help the developing baby to stay calm and content. the chiss believe that purring while incubating the egg also helps the child to grow healthy and strong.

the chiss, much like real life people, would probably have other rituals involving the eggs with their yet unborn children, like singing/playing music to them, talking to them, taking pictures of them, also stuff like keeping bits of your children’s egg shells much like people make imprints of their babies’ hands and feet and keep them for life. there’s just so much potential for weird alien tradition headcanons with the whole egg thing, i just love it a lot

anyway i hope yall enjoyed this eggsplanation :3

oooh i love it!!!

Uh. Chiss are not oviparous. Chiss are viviparous. Such a xenophobic chauvinistic and speciest thing to say.
