So, I realized something while rewatching The Force Awakens today… The map to Luke Skywalker/The first Jedi temple was recovered from the archives of the Empire, Ahch-To is in the Unknown Regions, Thrawn was helping Palpatine map the Unknown Regions…. It’s incredibly likely that Thrawn was at least partially responsible for the creation of that map.
Oooooh I like this theory!
I have more: It’s been theorized that Snoke/his species are the danger in the Unknown Regions that Thrawn was trying to guard against. What if in some sort of epic final battle between the Chiss and the Snokeses, Thrawn almost killed Snoke and that’s the reason his head is all messed up?
(This is getting ridiculous but whatever)
So…. I drew a little thing to go with this theory…
Basically the story here is that Thrawn was killed in the Chiss-Snokeses war. He was heartbroken that his mission to protect the galaxy had failed and Snoke gained control, just as he’d feared. But there was a glimmer of hope. Thrawn was watching from whatever afterlife non-Force sensitives have, and he saw that the map he’d helped create was now rolling around in a little Resistance droid. If the map got to them, Thrawn knew that the Resistance would carry on his mission and save the galaxy from Snoke’s merciless and destructive rule. Plus, his map helped create the First Order, which is how Snoke got into the galaxy, so if his map was later used to take the First Order down, I think he’d feel that his mistake had been repaired.
