LISTEN! What do you think about this piece?

Sergei Rachmaninov (Rachmaninoff) from 1873-1943.

One of the great piano composers from Russia during the Romantic period and beyond. This particular piece chosen (over the 500 that one can choose) is the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, for a concerto for piano and orchestra. It is set in 2 movements with and opening or moderato: Moderato: C minor, Adagio sostenuto – Più animato – Tempo I: C minor → E major, Allegro scherzando: E major → C minor → C major.

This movement is the 2nd.

The key parts promotes the idea of playing a simple arpeggiated – or a broken cord sound to add to rhythmic interest.

This recording was made in 1927 with the composer Leopold Stokowski & Philadelphia Orchestra.
